Oral Hygiene and Gum Health

Treatment for Gum Health - Hygiene Treatment

It is very important to maintain healthy gums. Gum Disease is very common and can cause bleeding gums and bad breath. Gum Disease tends to get worse over time and is the most common cause of tooth loss. Also Gum Disease has been linked to more serious conditions like Heart Disease and Diabetes.

We routinely screen patients at ‘check up’ appointments for signs of Gum Disease. Treatment of gum disease can be carried out by a dentist or a hygienist.

Hygienist Appointments

Hygienists are experts at cleaning teeth and treating gum disease.

Many patients choose to see the hygienist for a scale and polish, just to make their teeth look and feel nice. The hygienists also do air polishing which is a great way of removing staining from teeth.

Patients with gum disease can benefit from working with a hygienist to improve their gum health. Effective treatment of gum disease can reduce the risk of tooth loss and help improve overall health and wellbeing. This usually requires a number of appointments and a long term commitment from the patient to maintain excellent oral hygiene. It is very much a team approach---hygiene treatment will only succeed if the patient plays their part. The hygienists will spend considerable time showing patients how to effectively remove plaque from all surfaces of their teeth. Lifestyle changes that can help improve gum health are stopping smoking, not drinking too much alcohol and having a healthy diet. Our hygienists will discuss the individual needs of each patient to ensure the best possible outcomes.

The practice staff will be able to provide more information on the availability and cost of hygienist appointments,

Paying for Private Hygiene Treatment.

One option is to pay for treatment each time you see the hygienist. The fee will be based on the length of the appointment (as published in our Private Fee Guide) and our staff will be able to advise you of the cost when you book an appointment.

We offer private care plans which include 2,3 or 4 private hygienist appointments per year, and other benefits. These plans allow patients to spread the cost of private hygienist appointments over affordable monthly payments. We have information leaflets available in the practice and our staff will be happy to provide further information.
