Gum Disease

Treatment for Gum Health --- Hygiene Treatment

It is very important to maintain healthy gums. Gum Disease is very common and can cause bleeding gums and bad breath. Gum Disease tends to get worse over time and is the most common cause of tooth loss. Also Gum Disease has been linked to more serious conditions like Heart Disease.

We routinely screen patients at ‘check up’ appointments for signs of Gum Disease. If you have any issues we will inform you and discuss treatment options. We have information leaflets in the practice to help patients understand Gum Disease and its treatment.

Treatment of gum disease can be carried out by a dentist or a hygienist.

Hygienist Appointments

Hygienists are experts at cleaning teeth and gums. Many patients choose to see the hygienist, for a scale and polish, just to make their teeth look and feel nice. The hygienists also do air polishing which is a great way of removing staining from teeth.

Patients with gum disease can benefit from working with a hygienist to improve the health of their gums. Often this requires a number of appointments and a commitment from the patient to maintain excellent oral hygiene. Smoking causes gum disease and limits the beneficial effects of treatment, and so smokers will be encouraged to stop.

At present appointments with the hygienist are only available on a private basis. The practice staff will be able to provide more information
